First Reaction: Magical Warfare Episode 1

No…just…no.
What a disappointment; I couldn't even get through the first episode. This is a perfect example of trying to accomplish so much in so little time, and not knowing what the difference between what emotional dialogue and exposition is. In order to compare why I didn't like this first episode, I am going to compare it to Noragami's first episode:

In Noragami, we are first introduced to an action scene, and establishes what Yato, the main character (I think), does for a living; killing demons. We see his character, we see his actions, and we see the problems he's going through. We also meet Hiyori, the other main character, a girl who secretly likes Martial Arts. She encounters Yato one day, and saves him from being run over by a truck, causing something peculiar to happen (no spoilers here). When Hiyori wakes up in the hospital, the audience is interested to see what actually happened, because she can't remember it. When Yato comes to visit to see whether or not she's okay, we're even more interested. Then, Hiyori tries to resume her normal life, but notices that she's always feeling exhausted. Finally, after Yato fights another demon, we find out what's really going on with Hiyori, and the episode ends with Yato promising to help her with her predicament. This is a well-written first episode because it drops hints about what the series itself is about with subtlety, and doesn't mention the final reveal until the last few minutes, therefore keeping the audience engaged. It also stays true to its own story without feeling too rushed, and leaves enough information about the story for future episodes, making this episode the perfect introduction to what I hope will be an entraining series.

In Magical Warfare, the pacing is terrible, feeling incredibly rushed. The scenes feel like they were written by someone who wanted to introduce us to this world, but tried to give us all the information at once. We barely get an introduction to any of the characters before we are practically thrown into the world of magicians and whatnot. The action scenes take place almost immediately after we learn something and don't give you time to process what you just learned, introducing even more information that just flat-out makes the anime confusing and frustrating. It also falls into a vast range of clichés, mainly the comedic misunderstanding cliché, where the main character is accidentally on top of the girl and the girl freaks out, and in this case, tries to shoot him with a magic gun. Now, instead of yelling for help or fighting back, the main character tries to get her to calm down and explain what her deal is. Dude, she just tried to KILL you! CALL THE POLICE OR SOMETHING! The point where I stopped the first episode was when the "girlfriend" or childhood friend, used magical powers to grow her chest size. Yes, you just read that.

To conclude, I have dropped this series and do not intend on continuing it ever. Madhouse, what the heck happened to you? Why did you go from Death Note, Technolyze, and Paranoia Agent to this? It had an interesting setup, and you ruined it! That's it, I've had it with this show and I haven't even finished the first episode. I hope Noragami will continue to be entraining.
